Lined Pouch Tutorial

Lined Pouch Tutorial

I am a fanatic when it comes to storage. I like to keep all of my things nice and neat. I have tons of make-up bags, cosmetic cases, coin purses, etc. I have pouches for everything! Today I am going to review how to make a lined pouch. They are incredibly simple to make and their size can be easily adjusted fto fit your needs. They are great to use for storage in your diaper bag, to use as a toy bag for a toddler. You can even use them to hold items in your purse.

Materials Needed:
-1 piece fabric 12" x 12"

-1 piece of coordinating fabric 12" x 12"

-2 inch piece of thin elastic or ribbon (for closure)

-one button (3/4").

Begin by cutting your two coordinating fabrics into squares. You can cut them into any size that you would like. For the purpose of this tutorial, I have cut my square to appx. 12" x 12").

Now fold each square in half with right sides together. You may pin them in place if you would like. With a project this small, you shouldn't have to worry about the fabric not matching up. With larger pouches, I would recommend pinning them in place.

Next, using your sewing machine, sew up one the long side of the bag that is open and across one of the smaller edges using a 1/4" seam. Make sure you backstich at both the beginning and the end. Make sure that you leave one side open. It is also important that the openings are exactly the same size so the openings match up.

They should look like this when you're finished sewing.

Now it's time to decide which fabric will be on the exterior of your pouch. Turn that one right side out and press with a warm iron to make it look lovely. Leave the other fabric inside out.

Now you want to slide the lining of your pouch inside of the pouches exterior. Slide your hand inside he lining to help feed it inside. Use your fingertips to push the corners all the way into the pouch. Make sure you line up the seams. it will make it lay better. No wrinkles.

Now yo need to turn each of the raw edges of your fabric inward. Determine the length of your pouch, and then fold the exterior edge inward, so the wrong sides are together. Repeat this step with the lining of the pouch. Make sure your edges line up. I like to fold and press my lining before inserting it inside the pouch. But do whatever you believe is easiet for you. Once you match your edges, press them with an iron. Your project should look like this so far....

And the inside

Before you close up the lip of your pouch, you want to insert you loop for your enclosure. Fold your piece of elastic or ribbon in half and insert the raw edges in between the lining and the exterior of your pouch. Insert it at the midpoint and pin it in place. It should look like this...

Now, stitch all the way around the lip of your pouch. I use a 1/4" seam. And I like to backstich at the loop, just to make sure it's secure.

Almost finished. Time to add your button. Decide where you'd like the clutch to fold over.

Hand-stitch your button
using a needle and thread.

You're finished!

Enjoy!
